Tuesday in Strasbourg saw MEPs debate the conclusions of the last EU summit held on 15-16 October. The agenda included the financial crisis and Europe's recent troubled relations with Moscow. As holder of the rotating EU presidency Nicolas Sarkozy briefed MEPs on attempts to deal with the present financial crisis.
Europe "must not miss date with history"
In a detailed address to the Parliament, President Sarkozy stated his thoughts on climate change with conviction. He warned the Chamber that the EU's climate change package must not be over-shadowed by the current economic crisis stating "we must not miss our date with history."

The seminar, held on the 8th of October, was entitled “Regions as the catalysts for change: How EU regions are responding to the challenges of climate change". One of the objectives was to draw the attention to the December COP 14 Climate Conference in Poznan, the capital of the Wielkopolska Region. The Sixth European Week of Regions and Cities "Open Days 2008" kicks off in Brussels today. This year's edition of the EU's biggest event on European local governments is entitled "Regions and Cities in a Challenging World". The event will continue until 9 October. It is jointly organised by the Committee of the Regions, the European Commission and 217 partner regions and cities from 32 states. Some 7,400 participants from across the European Union will attend 145 seminars and workshops.
Wielkopolska, together with 9 partners: Niedersachsen, Emilia-Romagna, Northern and East Netherlands Provinces, Pilsen Region, Lower Silesia, Navarra, Yorkshire and Humber and East Midlands, will host two workshops. One of them, entitled „Regions as the catalysts for change: How EU regions are responding to the challenges of climate change", will be held on 8 October, 16:45, at the Wielkopolska Office in Brussels. The key attendees of the seminar will be Member of the European Parliament professor Jerzy Buzek and UN Representative from Geneva Jaco Tavernier, dealing with environmental programmes.
One of the objectives of the workshop will be to draw the attention of entire Europe to this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held in the capital of Wielkopolska.
