logo.jpgOn Wednesday, 4th November 2009, a high-level conference “The cohesion policy - thoughts for today and tomorrow” will take place in the premises of the European Commission in the Charlemagne building in Brussels. This event aims to give the possibility to exchange the views and opinions on the shape of the cohesion policy in the next financial perspective 2014-2020. The discussion will be held among the representatives of the EU member states and the European institutions, which are directly engaged in the programming and managing structural funds. The planned conference is organized on the occasion of the Fifth Anniversary of Poland’s Accession to the European Union and will contribute to the European debate on the future of the cohesion policy.

The discussion started with the publication of the report prepared by Fabrizio Barca, who will be one of the high-level experts taking part in the conference. Among the distinguished speakers we have also Mr. Paweł Samecki, the EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Mrs. Danuta Hubner, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Regional Development in the European Parliament, Mr. Dirk Ahner, the Director General of the DG REGIO in the European Commission and the ministers responsible for regional development in Poland, France, Hungary and Spain. Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission and Mr. Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament have also received a personal invitation to the conference.

The cohesion policy aims at supporting comprehensive and sustainable development of the EU. It’s main goal is to mitigate differences in the economic development among the European regions. Moreover, the cohesion policy being a substantial source of financing projects all over Europe, is also an important tool of stabilization. Today, in consequence of the global financial crises, the modifications and new challenges of the cohesion policy are being discussed.

The conference organized by the Union of the Voivodeships of the Republic of Poland, Polish regional offices in Brussels, Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU and with the support of the European Commission should provide an essential contribution to the debate on the revision of the EU budget.
