Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) is one of the biggest regions in Poland. As regards the area, it is the second biggest region in the country and as regards the number of inhabitants- the third.  Its area is comparable to the area of Belgium, and the number of inhabitants exceeds the population of Latvia and is only slightly lower than population in Ireland and Lithuania.

Wielkopolska is one of the fastest developing regions in Poland. Its attractiveness is determined by the good location, absorptive market, high industry development level, dynamics of the transformation process and a well developed surrounding of business. Wielkopolska would like to keep its strong position in Poland and improve its competitiveness towards other European regions. In order to achieve this goal, the region concentrates, first of all, on the development of communication infrastructure, construction of broadband networks, the use of research and scientific potential for the increase of companies' innovativeness, strengthening of farmsteads, increase of the share of tourist and leisure services in the region’s economy, improvement of the condition of environment and finally education. As Wielkopolska Region is covered by the aim I. Convergence within EU cohesion policy, in the present period of programming it shall be granted the so far biggest amount of structural funds- EUR 1.272,8 million.  Wielkopolska Regional Operation Program for 2007-2013 was signed with the European Committee on 6th September 2007. The grade of implementation of investments co-financed from the European funds, speaks for thriftiness of people and authorities of the region and give rise to hope for effective use of the union's subsidies in the future.
